Promoting cross-cultural understanding to shape the future

English education

At Keio SFC, all full-time English teachers hold master's degrees in TESOL or other related fields. Returnee students are taught exclusively by native-speaking English teachers for 6 hours a week, while other students are taught for 2 hours a week by native-speaking teachers and for 4 hours a week by Japanese teachers of English. English classes in Years 1 and 2 are divided into three proficiency-based levels, and students are taught in small groups. From Year 3 to Year 6, students are divided into two levels. In all year groups, students are exposed to a variety of communicative teaching methods. All senior high school students have the opportunity to take the TOEFL test every year in order to measure their English-language proficiency.

English as an essential tool for achieving world peace

English as an essential tool for achieving world peace

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015, with the aim of creating a better future for all. Cooperation between individuals, corporations and states is essential if we are to achieve these 17 Global Goals, and English has become an indispensable tool in collaborating and problem-solving with people from different backgrounds. Based on our belief that English is an essential tool in achieving world peace, we endeavor to broaden our students' horizons by exposing them to various global issues and by encouraging them to express their own opinions while respecting those of others - all through the medium of English. In this way, English education at Keio SFC is not limited to the learning of grammar and vocabulary from textbooks, but includes activities such as interacting with exchange students, making presentations on Japanese culture, discussing and debating English newspaper articles, and writing analytical essays that propose solutions to complex social problems. Our major objective is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills in English that they will need to make a meaningful contribution to the SDGs and to society as a whole.

The Model United Nations (MUN)

An essential tool to achieve world peace is the Model United Nations (MUN)

The Model United Nations (MUN)

Year 6 Alpha students (those with advanced English proficiency) participate in the Model United Nations. Here they take on the role of UN delegates and strive to mirror the actual policies of their assigned countries while debating a variety of global issues. The focus in MUN is on consensus-building, and students use their knowledge and skills to negotiate with delegates from other countries until they have reached feasible solutions that are acceptable to all.
Through the MUN, students learn how to view the world from another's perspective, recognize cultural diversity, and gain a deeper understanding of real-world issues through interactive simulations in English.

International Exchange

At our school, the proportion of students who were admitted via the Returnees Entrance Examination is 20% for the Junior High School and 25% for the Senior High School. This allows opportunities for intercultural exchange to occur naturally in the school environment. In English classes, students take classes based on their English abilities.
Short-term exchange programs are held throughout the year with 12 schools in 7 countries.

Long-Term Study Abroad Program

While there is no in-house long-term study abroad program, several students participate in these programs every year through intermediate agencies such as AFS and YFU. Students study not only in Europe and the United States, but also in Asia or non-English-speaking countries.
In addition, our school accepts long-term international students. These students take classes and participate in the school trips and events with our students.
