The Mission of Keio Gijuku
Keio Gijuku is more than a mere place for academic pursuit. Its mission is to be a constant source of honorable character and a paragon of intellect and morals for the entire nation; and for each member to apply this spirit to elucidate the essence of family, society, and nation. They will not only articulate this essence in words, but also demonstrate it in their actions, and by doing so make Keio a leader of society.

Timeline
1858 Yukichi Fukuzawa establishes a school for Dutch studies in Edo (Tokyo)
A school for Dutch studies that Fukuzawa opened at the residence of the Okudaira family of the Nakatsu Domain in Tsukiji Teppozu in Edo was the forerunner of Keio Gijuku.
1868 Fukuzawa's school renamed as Keio Gijuku
Three tours of Europe and the United States gave Fukuzawa an acute sense of the pressing need for modern education, including English and economics, and he established a school, which would become a forerunner of modern education independent of the domain or nation with the introduction of a tuition fees system. The school was christened "Keio Gijuku" after the name of the then-current era.
1890 Launch of the university faculties
Fukuzawa was laying the groundwork for the university; establishing a college (Department of Literature, Department of Economics, Department of Law) in 1890, with the invitation of three professors from Harvard University.
In 1920 Keio Gijuku was accredited as a university-based on the University Establishment Ordinance, becoming the first private university in Japan, which included the School of Medicine.
1898 Completion of affiliation of schools
In 1898, the educational system was integrated, with a through-line consisting of six years of the Yochisha Elementary School (primary education), five years of the Futsubu Junior High School (secondary education), to five years of the university departments. This marked the completion of the integrated education system, which would comprise 16 years of study from the Yochisha Elementary School, or 10 years from Futsubu Junior High School, and which remains in place today.
